Competencies Required for the Oil and Gas Industry in Australia
With the increasing job boom in the coal seam gas industry,I often get asked what are the requirements to best get a job in this industry. In Queensland there is a competency standard for the petroleum and gas drilling industry for clients and contractors that are required. Below I have listed what is required under the competency standard act:
1) For traditional coal seam gas drilling
a) Leasehand- part Certificate II in oil and gas drilling- onshore
b) Motorman- Full certificate II in oil and gas drilling-onshore
c) Derrickman- certificate III in oil and gas- Onshore
d) Trainee driller- Certificate III plus additional units
e) Driller- Certificate IV in oil and gas-Onshore
f) Toolpusher/Rig manager- Diploma in oil and Gas onshore
2) For mineral exploration rigs with an expectation of encountering coal seam gas
a) Utility worker- part certificate II in oil and gas drilling-onshore
b) Drillers assistant- certificate II in oil and gas drilling-onshore
c) Driller- Certificate III in oil and gas drilling-onshore
d) Senior driller- certificate IV in oil and gas drilling-onshore
e) Driller supervisor- Diploma in oil and gas drilling-onshore
Apart from these requirements, employees are usually required to have the GIQ, and may also need a variety of other certificates like first aid depending on what the contractors client requests.
