With the increasing job boom in the coal seam gas industry,I often get asked what are the requirements to best get a job in this industry. In Queensland there is a competency standard for the petroleum and gas drilling industry for clients and contractors that are required. Below I have listed what is required under the competency standard act:
1) For traditional coal seam gas drilling
a) Leasehand- part Certificate II in oil and gas drilling- onshore
b) Motorman- Full certificate II in oil and gas drilling-onshore
c) Derrickman- certificate III in oil and gas- Onshore
d) Trainee driller- Certificate III plus additional units
e) Driller- Certificate IV in oil and gas-Onshore
f) Toolpusher/Rig manager- Diploma in oil and Gas onshore

2) For mineral exploration rigs with an expectation of encountering coal seam gas
a) Utility worker- part certificate II in oil and gas drilling-onshore
b) Drillers assistant- certificate II in oil and gas drilling-onshore
c) Driller- Certificate III in oil and gas drilling-onshore
d) Senior driller- certificate IV in oil and gas drilling-onshore

Apart from these requirements, employees are usually required to have the GIQ, and may also need a variety of other certificates like first aid depending on what the contractors client requests.
